How Do I Know God's Calling for My Life?

GettrGab

Have you ever asked, “What is God’s calling for my life? Where do I start when seeking my purpose?” You aren’t alone. Everyone, at some point in their lives, has asked this question. And it is a good question to ask. Without the Holy Spirit’s direction for your life, you wander in the desert for far too long.

How to Answer God’s Calling for My Life

In today’s world, patience is not looked upon with favor. God says that those who are patient and wait on Him will inherit the earth (Psalm 37:7-9). In a recent blog, we discussed how patiently waiting for the promises of God has its benefits.

When you are asking the question, “What is God’s calling for my life?” it is helpful to also ask these 7 questions…

7 Questions to Ask When Discovering God’s Calling for Your Life

  1. If I could only accomplish one thing for the rest of my life, what would it be?
  2. What advice do people ask me for?
  3. What experiences have I been through that would help others?
  4. What drives me and gets me excited?
  5. What do I love to learn about?
  6. What activities motivate me the most?
  7. What can I do that makes a positive impact on others?

What Does it Mean to Wait upon the Lord?

As mentioned above, there are benefits to patiently waiting for God’s calling in your life to manifest. But what does “waiting” look like?

In Hebrew, there are several words for waiting. One of the most common is “qavah,” which means “to look for, hope, expect.” It can also mean “to collect, bind together, intertwined.”

As you wait for the Spirit to give you direction for God’s calling in your life, allow yourself to be “intertwined and bound together” with Him.

Psalm 25:5 says,

“Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day.”

The Passion Translation says it this way,

“Escort me into your truth; take me by the hand and teach me. For you are the God of my salvation; I have wrapped my heart into yours all day long!”

Take time to enter into His presence today. Bind yourself with His Spirit and allow the Father to wrap His loving arms around you. He has a calling and a purpose for your life. Trust this promise.

Be Aware of This as the Promises Draw Near

Right now, we are in the Counting Down of the Omer, a period of time between Passover and Shavuot when the enemy really presses in, trying to derail God’s calling in your life through distractions. The Lord has you on a path, and the enemy says, “Turn here instead. Look how great this opportunity is!”

Here’s how the enemy is working in this hour…

You’ve gone through the 7 questions above and you’ve written down the vision (see Habakkuk 2:2-3). You know and feel the Holy Spirit guiding your steps, even if you don’t know exactly how you are going to get there yet.

Then distractions come. Your emotions start driving you rather than the Spirit. Your mind “sees” something positive along the path to your calling. It’s not quite in alignment with what the Lord has given you, but it seems good. You start to think, “Well, this purpose seems good, so maybe I’ll go in this direction.”

But hear this: When you go down a path of distraction, it leads to destruction. You miss God’s calling for your life in this hour. This is why it is critical to write down the vision!  And be patient, patience is the companion of wisdom.

Stay Focused with Truth for God’s Calling in Your Life to Be Manifested

Start by answering the 7 questions above. See the pattern in the desires that God placed in your heart. Your talents and abilities are God-given. Wait for the Lord.

Next, wait patiently upon the Lord and exercise faith. Use this time to build trust in your relationship with the Father, Yeshua, and the Spirit. He is the author and perfector of your faith. Keep praying and proclaiming for strength.

Finally, meditate on and declare the verses below (or others that the Spirit has laid on your heart) as you wait. Know that when you align with His Spirit, He will release…

  • Wisdom
  • Power
  • Authority
  • Favor
  • Faith
  • Kingdom destiny

…in you and through you as His earthen vessel. Then you will know God’s calling for your life!

  1. “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.”—Psalm 37:4
  2. “He will guard the feet of His saints, but the wicked shall be silent in darkness. ‘For by strength no man shall prevail.’”—1 Samuel 2:9
  3. “Direct my steps by Your word, and let no iniquity have dominion over me.”—Psalm 119:133
  4. “I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek Your servant, for I do not forget Your commandments.”—Psalm 119:176
  5. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand.”—Psalm 37:23-24
  6. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.”—Psalm 32:8
  7. “Blessed is that man who makes the Lord his trust, and does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.”—Psalm 40:4
  8. “Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established… When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.”—Proverbs 16:3, 7
  9. “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”—Matthew 6:13
  10. “Then the Lord answered me and said: ‘Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.’”—Habakkuk 2:2-3

In Summary

Don’t quit. The enemy will use distraction in this season of Counting Down of the Omer. But this is a season of inviting. The Lord is inviting you to follow Him as He guides your steps. You don’t have to push open the doors in your life because there are doors being opened for you by the Spirit. The door of opportunity is right before you. Allow God’s Spirit to lead you through as you bind together with Him.
